Corporate Responsibility

Enterprise Development Initiative

UNB believes in being a good corporate citizen and to consider the interest of society by taking responsibility for the impact of our activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment. We regard our obligation to extend beyond legislation as we see ourselves as voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for our employees, communities and society at large.

In order to achieve the above, we have consciously and deliberately and within our experience, knowledge and means, decided to progressively embark on projects that are meant to realize the above.

For the purpose of impact and sustainability, we have chosen to focus on enterprise development, health and nutrition.

Enterprise Development

Enterprise development is part of UNB's BBBEE program.

In order to achieve our operating environment transformation, we are guided by the following:

  1. Principles:
  2. Focused and considerate:
We focus our strength on economic development of the previously disadvantaged communities while being considerate to the greater good of all communities.

  3. Projects Targeted:
  4. We target projects which may benefit from our strength and expertise. While designing or implementing any programmes, we make use of our past experience and learnings.

  5. Creativeness & Innovation
  6. While encouraging organic development, we also work with external service providers in order to learn from their experiences and leanings.

  7. Market Partnership
  8. Together with our market partners we make market development effective. We work with consumers, retailers and distributors as well as industry consultants in developing new solutions to problems by combining our collective skills and competencies.

  9. Sustainability
  10. We ensure that our projects exude quality, impact and sustainability. We co-ordinate the efforts of all partners along with us in realizing the above.

Skills Development, Preferential Procurement, Socio-Economic Development, Ownership and Management Control

In each of the elements above, UNB has developed a program to ensure maximum participation by the previously disadvantaged people in business activities UNB is involved in.
